What is Cinco de Mayo?

Most people think it's Mexican Independence Day. It isn't — that's 16th September. Cinco de Mayo celebrates the Battle of Puebla in 1862, when a smaller Mexican army defeated the much larger French forces of Napoleon III. An extraordinary underdog victory.

It's barely celebrated in Mexico itself. The enormous celebrations you see are mostly a US tradition, a way for Mexican-Americans to honour their heritage and culture.

And mariachi music — so associated with Mexico — actually has French and German roots in its instrumentation. Culture is always a conversation.
